This is meant to be a useful post. As the Glammapreneur who really wants to put an end to the spam and garbage that plagueis online, I want you to keep this post handy, to help you avoid an embarrassing problem.
And i'm not going to tiptoe around this ... Don't get dinged for STUPID! On the left... I think the bitmoji says it best!
It's also a good reference post for you to assess whether or not you should fall for the latest form of this hoax/scam/urban legend (choose the one that you like best, or that you know best.)
This issue is rampant and really wastes your time, and everyone else’s time too.
Let’s get down to it:
You get a message in messenger and its starts out something like this…..
Verified LYNDA DID IN FACT SEND THIS TO MR connected to your Facebook account. If one of your contacts accepts it, you will also be hacked, so make sure that all your friends know it. Thanks. Forwarded as received…..
Ok Please take a beat.. Before you flood your friends with that old hoax ( I’ll explain how you can always be in the know) or any of the following hoaxes and urban legends…
And lastly NO NO NO neither Oprah nor Tyler Perry are giving away money..
Here’s the thing.. Just forwarding this crap to any people, say, more than three, makes you one of the spammers crowd. Bet you didn’t even think of that! I know, I know.. You just want to be sure your friends are safe…
So instead of doing as you’re instructed and copying and pasting to forward to all of your friends…
Why? Do you really want your inbox, or messenger, what’s app or any other chat flooded with these messages? Yes, Yes, I know you THINK you are being helpful..
Yet, it makes more sense for you NOT to forward this stuff.
Any time you get a “please pass this to ALL your friends” message - take a minute.. Go to Snopes.
Snopes is a really good source for keeping us aware of the hoaxes, scams, urban legends and downright silliness that's out there…AND anything that might actually be true…
The creators are, I believe, Canadian. A couple from out west who started this back in 1994 …
Dave Mikkelson, and his wife, Bev ( i corresponded with her in the early 2000’s as i found this really useful) and I love that they built a business on trying to help real people avoid all the crap that's out there…
From the Snopes site:
Snopes is the internet’s definitive fact-checking resource.
When misinformation obscures the truth and readers don’t know what to trust, Snopes.com’s fact checking and original, investigative reporting lights the way to evidence-based and contextualized analysis. We always document our sources so readers are empowered to do independent research and make up their own minds.
As demand for reliable fact checks grew, so did Snopes. Now it’s the oldest and largest fact-checking site online, widely regarded by journalists, folklorists, and readers as an invaluable research companion.
Snopes.com is an independent publication owned by Snopes Media Group.
Take your own security seriously. if you are taking precautions, setting your security and privacy well, and not responding in a knee jerk fashion… What do i mean?
You need to be sure you are safe, and that means being safe for your friends. DO NOT simply send on, copy and paste, or otherwise bombard your friends, family and business associates with unfounded garbage messages. It simply makes you seem like a spammer.
It's like the old what to do if you see flames on yourself…
STOP- DON’T just click and copy
DROP - THE FEAR and be diligent in your research before you forward, copy, paste or otherwise involve anyone else.
ROLL - OVER to Snopes to ascertain the truth about the info you received. 99 times out of 100 you won’t have to go any further.
Let’s work on keep ourselves safe and NOT falling prey to every hoax.. Spammer… urban legend…
